Building a breakout space that gets used
The trick with breakout furniture is that it is modular for a reason. Mawsley units come as corner pieces, D-ends, left and right end units, backless central units and 90 degree curves, inner and outer, so you can run a straight sofa along one wall this year and re-form the same pieces into a circular booth or capsule island when the room changes. There are ready-made Mawsley sets too, the L-shaped corner sofa and the circular island among them, if you would rather start from a proven layout. Either way, buy the units, not the layout, and the furniture outlives every rearrangement.
For eating rather than lounging, wipe-clean surfaces beat upholstery every time. Pair cafe and bistro seating with tables at normal or poseur height, add stools where space is tight, and keep a couple of coffee and occasional tables among the soft seating so cups have somewhere to land other than the arm of a sofa.
